This is my very first one after joing you guys. [

I was watching one TED talks actually yesterday, which was published on Dec 2015.

1)  Refugees have the right to be protected

During 2015, almost one million refugees and migrants arrived in Europe from many different countries.

Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh (孟加拉国), and Eritrea (厄立特里亚,东非的一个国家).

One million refugees, EU population = 550 million.

refugees spiked so fast in last six months.

spike: a sharp increase in the magnitude or concentration of sth  飙升

this huge increase was triggered…..

triggered: cause (an event or situation)

the living conditions have been deteriorating

       deteriorate: verb, become progressively worse

87% of the Syrians in Jordan and 93% of the Syrians in Lebanon live below the national poverty lines.

Only half of the children go to school. He thought the reason why triggered the refugees’ problem is : The World Food Programme was forced, for lack of resources, to cut by 30% food support to the Syrian refugees. “The world is abandoning us. "

devil’s advocate (a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular causes or policy)

Ethiopia has received more than 600000 refugees. They have a policy, called “people to people”.

misinterpret: misunderstand  误解

Lebanon and Jordan are middle-income countries, which are pillars of stability in the region.

pillar: a person or thing regarded as reliably providing essential support for something

bilateral cooperation is essential    (bilateral: having or relating two sides, affecting both sides: involving two parties, especially countries)

multilateral cooperation:

multilateral: agreed upon or participated in by three or more parties, especially the governments of  different countries.

in protracted situations

         protract: prolong

It will pave the way for….

pave the way for: create the circumstances to enable to happen or be done

penetrating:  able to make a way through or into something  穿透的

crusaders:   a fighter in the medieval Crusades

feeling marginalized: treat (a person, group, or concept) as insignificant

impunity and unpredictability tend to prevail

prevail: prove more powerful of superior

impunity: exception from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences

2) Laura Boushnak: For these women, reading is a daring act

The details of the Ted talk can be find in @桃滔淘桃   study notes. I would like to write       something down here.

Last year, I read one book, named half the sky. 【TS读书笔记】《天空的另一半》It is written    by one couple reporters. You can tell, they did a bunch of researches for this book.

While reading the book, it made me cry a lot. It really opened my eyes. I knew some of them, but never thought the truth is so horrible which women are still facing such horrible times right now worldwide.

There were so many girls have been killed in the last fifty years, just because they were girls. They were not well-educated, they were poor people who living in poverty area, such as in India and Pakistan, or African.

Moreover, the book mentioned some girls who got married at very early ages and were beating by her husband and the mother-in-law, as well as the husband's other family members.  They cannot not go to work, they cannot go to school, they don't have any money for living if they left their husband. And the government did not help them at all! So many young girls just like the "Fayza" from the ted talk, got married even at 8 years old. When she was 18,   she was already divorced mother with 3 kids. Think about what I was doing when I was 8     years old. I was in the school. Learning new stuff with classmates sitting in the classroom,   playing game with classmates during the break, eating good food making by mum.

I think I am kind of feminist. Women should have our own rights, more rights in the male-dominated world.

The last sentence I would like to quote here: "Question your convictions. Be who you to want to be, not who they want you to be. Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."
