Ivan Coyote: Why we need gender-neutral bathrooms
we are used to say that there are three kinds of people: man, woman and female-doctor.
But we know that in Thailand, ladyboy (or hemophrodite) is popular as in a tourist industry.
Nowadays, amount of homosexual people has been increasing, resulting in many countries have accepted their marriage legally. More, transsexual persons have been getting a lot of attention lately.
This talk is talking about the trans person who need a gender-neutral bathrooms in all public places. Before this talk, I have never thought such a problem. Most attention on trans person were focus on some kinda rich or famous people. Out there, many trans persons have to pee or change their gym closet at public bathroom or gym changing hall.
The speaker’s own experience, one of the problem was public bathrooms. She was used to be a little girl but now a man. But physically he is a women, probably he should go to lady’s room. However, he's been verbally attacked behind their doors, hauled out by security guards with his pans still halfway pulled up. He has been stared at, screamed at, whispered about, and one time he got smacked in the face by a little old lady’s purse. We may say that he can use the men’s room, but he is not a man!
Not only trans adults suffered, the children suffer as well. Think about the pubic place for youth where they often go to, such as public pools, gyms, libraries, hospitals, universities, and airports… which bathroom they could go to pee. The speaker gave an example that she is a self-identified tomboy. The teacher instructed here to stay out of the boys’ bathroom, and she got harassed when she tried to use the girls’ bathroom. She was only four years old, and she had already been taught the brutal lesson that there was no bathroom door at preschool welcomed her.
Giving trans persons a safe place to pee or get changed need society’s support, hope that someday it will come.
