Debate: Does the world need nuclear energy?
Nuclear energy? Do we need or do we not need? It is always a question.
First it was the Chernobyl disaster that occurred on 26 April 1986.
In 2011 Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accidents primarily caused by the earthquake.
Later of the year, German announced that they would closed all the nuclear power plants by 2022. Then another question is what the replace power generation would be? Renewable energy? But the solar and wind are inconstant.
This talk was the debate the proposition between two professonals. The topic was “what the world needs now is nuclear energy”.
Yes - by Steward Brand: the founders of the environmental movement, the founder of the Whole Earch Catalog.
No - by Professor Mark Jacobson from Stanford
In the speech, there were many technical terms. I am not going to write here.
For me, I think both of them won.
Each energy has its disadvantage. Of course nuclear energy can offer massive energy comparing to other energy. However, the risk is high as well. How to deal the waste is another problem.
There was one point I was quite suprised that Stanford professor, their team workers calculated that the CO2 from nuclear power plant was not that low, if thinking about the life cycle.
