【Reading 1808】Jane Eyre
《Jane Eyre》is written by Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), who was born in Haworth, Yorkshire, the north England. Her father is a priest and her mother a full time housewife. The author has another two sisters, both of them are well-known as great writers. So three of them are famous regarded as " The Three Bronte Sisters" in England.
The book《Jane Eyre》is about the story of Jane Eyre, she had a gloomy sufferings of her childhood, but she grow up becoming a teacher of the charity Lo-wood Institution, when she felt she wanted to see the world outside, she left there to experience another kind of life as a governess of Adele, the little girl who was adopted by Mr.Rochester, after suffering numerous difficulties, she finally found her true love.
I like this book very much, while finishing this book, I also went to watch the movie. They all reveals so much significance.
1, Woman's independence, liberty, and love value concept.
When Jane felt boring with the life of Lo-wood Institution ,she wanted to change,so she looked for another job by sending the advertisement to the newspaper, she desired to experience other unknown life. While learning or teaching in the lo-wood Institution is not her first own will, however she realized that she ought to make her own decision for change, and she did follow her own heart, and become more and more independent.
And yet, when facing the love, she did it as well. Jane got to know that Mr.Rochester already had a wife who was still living, the real awful reality shocked her, also betrayed her own moral and love value concept, her belief could not allow herself to answer Mr.Rochester’s begging ,remaining stay and accompany him, although she loved him deeply.
She left Thornfield immediately.
Though St.John saved Jane’s life and arrange her a new job, as a teacher of the village school, she did the work well, she became living bravely again. Fortunately she then inherited her uncle’s property, she wanted to share the fortune with St.John and his kind sisters, instead of accepting St.John’s proposal, she still believe the real love.
2, The equality of men and women in love and the social status.
What make me quite impressive are the sentences that Jane said to Rochester, and they are also my favorite:
“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! —I have as much soul as you, —and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you through the medium of custom, nor even of mortal fresh; —it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal, —as we are!”
How striking you can image when Rochester heard these words above!
3,The Religion
I don’t agree with St.John’s love values, he wanted Jane to be his missionary wife without real love. But I can understand him as a pious believer to God, everyone has different belief and they devote themselves into it .
《Jane Eyre》really deserve to read a few more times.
