Daughter preference in Japan: a shift ingender role attitudes?日本，不再重男轻女

Unlike other EastAsian nations where preference for sons over daughters still prevails, genderpreference for children in Japan has progressively shifted from son preferenceto visible daughter preference over the past few decades.不同于其它东亚国家的重男轻女思想，过去几十年，日本对于孩子的性别倾向已经渐渐由重男轻女而转为明显的女儿偏好。

The extent to whichindividuals’ child gender preference is shaped by their gender role attitudesand evaluate whether daughter preference. It is a reflection of convergence or persistent divergence ingender roles in Japan.个人对孩子的性别偏好程度取决于其自身的性别角色态度，这决定了女儿偏好与否。这也反映了在日本性别角色分歧的收敛和持续。

Data from theSingle Persons subset of the 11th Japanese National Fertility Survey conductedby the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research in 1997suggests that the effectof gender role attitudes on one’s child gender preference differs formen and women. The tendency forpreference for daughters among the Japanese has been revealed by a number oflarge-scale national surveys. Empirical papers on the topic have also been published inJapanese journals. Gender preference for children in Japan has progressivelyshifted from son preference to visible daughter preference over the past fewdecades. This may appear shocking to sociologists and demographers since it hasbeen long believed that preferencefor sons over daughters prevails in populations of East Asia. There is alarge volume of published research that uncovers parental son preference incountries such as China and the Republic of Korea. However, not much researchhas been published on the state of this issue in Japan. Such chronic lack ofinterest is perhaps attributable to: (1) the assumption that Japan is similarin its gender preferences for children to its neighbors because of itsgeographic proximity and shared Confucius background; and/or (2) thepresumption that the Japanese exhibit less or no son preference given itshigher level of economic development, thereby making it less appealing toexamine. The issue of parental gender preferences for children hasimplication notonly for human rights but also for its demographic impact. In developingcountries, salient son preference causes sex-selective abortion, female infanticide, or femaleneglect. Also, we know from research on China that son preference coupled with strict fertility regulationshas raised the issue of imbalanced sex ratios at birth. Thus, an emergence ofskewed sex ratios at birth is a likely scenario if daughter preference continues to becommon in a society with declining fertility.关于父母对孩子性别偏好的问题不仅牵扯到人权，而且会影响人口统计，在发展中国家，严重的男孩偏好会导致性别选择性堕胎、杀害女婴或忽视女性。而且，通过一些调查我们知道，在中国，重男轻女思想加上严格的计划生育政策，造成了男女性别比例严重失调的问题。因此，一个生育率下降的社会中出现持续的普遍的女儿性别偏好，这可能会引起性别比率失衡的问题。
