Dr Sam Parnia, an assistant professor at the StateUniversity of New York and a former research fellow at the University of Southampton who led theresearch, said that he previously that patients who described near-deathexperiences were only relating hallucinatory events.
One man, however, gave a “very credible” account of whatwas going on while doctors and nurses tried to bring him back to life – andsays that he felt he was observing his resuscitation from the corner of theroom.
Dr Parnia said: “We know the brain can’t function whenthe heart has stopped beating.“But in this case, conscious awareness appears tohave continued for up to three minutes.“The man described everything that hadhappened in the room, but importantly, he heard two bleeps from a machine thatmakes a noise at three minute intervals. So we could time how long theexperienced lasted for.

Dr Parnia’s study involved 2,060 patients from 15hospitals in the UK, US and Austria, and has been published in the journal Resuscitation.
Of those who survived, 46 per cent experienced a broad range of mentalrecollections, nine per cent had experiences compatible with traditional definitions of anear-death experience and two per cent exhibited full awareness with explicit recall of“seeing” and “hearing” events – or out-of-body experiences.

Self Awareness_Key to Emotional Intelligence
“If your emotional abilities aren't in hand, if you don'thave self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions,if you can't have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter howsmart you are, you are not going to get very far.
Daniel Goleman

“IQ is a major factor in deciding which profession youcan get into. But once you are in that field, emotional intelligence emerges asa much stronger predictor of who will be most successful, because it is how wehandle ourselves in our relationships that determines how well we do once weare in a given job.”
Daniel Goleman
A recent survey of 75 members of the Stanford GraduateSchool of Business Advisory Council rated self-awareness as the most important capability forleaders to develop. Executives need to know where their natural inclinations lie in order to boostthem or compensate for them. Self-awareness is about identifying their ownpersonal idiosyncrasies— the characteristics that executives take to be the norm-- but actually represent the exception.

Self-awareness is indeed very important for leaders, andis one of the five dimensions of “Emotional Intelligence” identified by Dr.Daniel Goleman, a leading expert on the subject of “EQ.” In the old days, perhaps a person in a position of responsibility could survive solely on the basis oftheir “IQ” and professional expertise. But in the complex world we now live in,where people have increasingly higher standards for those they follow, leadersare expected to continuously develop their EQ if they are to earn the respectof others.

Never heard of “Emotional Intelligence or “EQ?” Then Isuggest that this article is going to be important for you!
Goleman’s 5 Dimensions of Emotional Intelligence include:
1. Self-awareness: literally ‘knowing yourself’
2. Self-regulation: managing yourself and your moods
3. Motivation: knowing what motivates you and what doesnot
4. Empathy: the ability to experience others as legitimate and valuable andidentify with their struggles
5. Social skills: the ability to build rapport with others, whenever needed

We claim that Self Awareness is the ‘master key’ toEmotional Intelligence and that the other four of Goleman’s EQ elements allultimately link backto Self-Awareness.
So in this article we are going to talk about threethings regarding Self-Awareness:
• What is it really?
• How can you develop it?
• Why it is the absolutely essential “Master Key” foraspiring leaders

Self-Awareness:what is it really?
According to Mind Tools (http://www.mindtools.com/) “Ifyou're self-aware, you always know how you feel, and you know how your emotionsand your actions can affect the people around you. Being self-aware when you'rein a leadership position also means having a clear picture of your strengthsand weaknesses, and it means behaving with humility.”
That’s a good start but to really understand SelfAwareness, you must go deeper than this. In our definition, Self-Awareness and“Other Awareness” are simply two sides of the same coin. The two are naturalparts of the same process, just as Yin is part of Yang. “So what?” you ask!Well, think about this:这是个不错的开端,但想真正了解自我意识,你必须更深入地了解它。
• If there were no ‘others’ it wouldn’t make any sense totalk about a ‘self’ at all…would it? As humans, we naturally experience our‘self’ in relationship to others, whether they be colleagues, family members,or utter strangers.
• Those ‘others’ also experience their ‘self” only inrelation to ‘others.’“
-

• Therefore, Self Awareness and Other Awareness shouldnot be separated: when we talk about one, we must talk about the other.
• For you emerging leaders: there is nothing more important thanunderstanding your self, in order that you can understand others.

And, since humans are at root, self-centered, most people are more thanwilling to looking in the mirror once in a while, right? But that kind ofself-admiration and narcissism are NOT what we are writing about here. We aretalking about you, willing to see the WHOLE picture of yourself, embrace it asit is, and start working with it. Ok, if you are ready, we can now answer thequestion “What is self awareness really?”JThe good news in all this?As you deepen your insightsinto yourself, others stop seeming so mysterious and hard to understand. Youwill gain insight, empathy and confidence simply by working on your ownSelf-Awareness. What a deal!

Self-Awareness includes:
• Knowing what you like, dislike and why: what motivatesyou and what demotivates you, being aware of your own values
• Being crystal clear about your talents and strengthsAND your weaknesses
• Being conscious of the content of your own mind (not ascommon as you might think!)…the ability to observe your own thoughts
• Knowing your own beliefs and knowing which ones empoweryou and which ones should be discarded…including beliefs about yourself ANDothers
• Knowing your direction in life: where you are headedand why
• Knowing and appreciating your own unique value as ahuman being

Over the weekend,state-owned China Petrochemical Corp (Sinopec Group) announced two deals whichwill hurt shareholders who own its Hong Kong subsidiary, Sinopec. First,Sinopec will sell a 30 per cent stake in its fuel retailing business. Chinesewhite goods maker Haier, finance companies and domestic investment funds arepaying $17.5bn for assets Bernstein thinks could be worth $22bn.

The second dealwill save the groupfrom a writedown onits 40 per cent stake in affiliate Yizheng Chemical. Under mainland rules, lossmaking Yizheng faceddelisting next year, resulting in a writedown for Sinopec of as much as $1.7bn.To save Yizheng from delisting, the Sinopec Group parent will inject itsprofitable oil services group into Yizheng in return for just under $4bn in newshares of Yizheng. The price Yizheng will pay for this new business, at 10times 2014 earnings, looks cheap – especially for a company expecting toincrease earnings by nearly one half next year.

How to be an entrepreneur happily marriedto an entrepreneur
This post is inpartnership with Time. The article below was originally published atEntrepreneur.com
ROMIO and Juliettemeans more to us than a Shakespearean, romantic tragedy. We chose to name ourseparate businesses in a complementary way, which is the way we approach ourrelationship. Our cats are even named Mark Anthony and Cleopatra.
When we first gottogether, only one of us was in the startup role. Now, happily married fornearly seven years, we’re both running our own businesses in New York City.Tarik runs ROMIO, a platform that provides trusted recommendations for localservices from friends and neighbors, while Rechelle runs Juliette, a mobile appthat offers premiumovernight laundry service.

The best way we candescribe our relationship now is a roller coaster ride, traveling in differentdirections at varying speeds. We work perfectly opposite schedules, with Tarikbuilding ROMIO by meeting local experts during the day and Rechelle running herservice at night, and are always on the go. But every day at 7 p.m., weunfasten our seatbelts, get off the roller coaster and make an effort to share ameal together before parting in different directions.

We’ve found fourways to keep our relationship at home healthy while balancing our growingcompanies.
Time:
The greatestbenefit of being married to another entrepreneur is the ability to control ourown schedules. Constantly working and driving a startup is draining, so weforce ourselves to take short vacations to recharge. About two weeks ago, wetook a trip to Saint Thomas and did absolutely nothing except lay on the beachand soak in the sun. We came back fully recharged and relaxed. This helpstremendously, especially since most small business owners work more than 50 toeven 60 hours per week, the Financial Post reported, something we’ve definitelyfound to be true in our own lives.
If we can’t take ashort trip away from the city, we try to make an effort to relax and wind downtogether, whether it’s at dinner table or going out to see a new show or movieat the theater.

Mind share:
While we may be at different development stages in ourstartups, we see a lot of synergies to building our businesses—especially sincewe’re in the same industry. We often leverage mutual contacts and sharecampaigns, from investors to website developers. And we never hesitate to useeach other as a sounding board for ideas and concepts, tweaking andbrainstorming aloud, before taking it public to the team or investors.

or example, we tap into Rechelle’s strong background inmarketing and social skills to get feedback for ROMIO’s user interface. We alsoleverage Tarik’s background in finance and strong business acumen to strengthenJuliette’s business model.
